Get The Best Deals For Black Friday (and the rest of the year)
I’m posting this on the day of Black Friday because this isn’t a list of products for you to buy. Instead it’s a thought I’ve been having about buying music making products.
Buy Things That Inspire You
I realised in the last year or so that I was buying gear in the hopes that it would do the hard work for me. The reality is that being creative and writing music is a satisfying struggle. It requires time and persistence – both of which you can’t buy in a Black Friday sale.
Inspiration is an ally when it comes to songwriting. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not a believer in relying on inspiration to motivate me to write music. I have a dedicated writing time and I show up regardless of how I feel.
Having a bit of gear that inspires you to create is worth spending your money on. I ended up buying Arturia’s V Collection X this year because I know it’ll provide months of inspiration as well as being a solid music production tool for other artist’s projects.
Pro Tip: If you think you need a bit of gear, try watching a tutorial or reading the manual for something you already own. I have found new inspiration to dive back into something I already own by doing this.
Buy Things That Solve A Specific Problem
Solving problems ultimately leads to solving new problems. This is what makes songwriting and music production an exciting journey.
Over the years, I’ve bought gear because I thought I needed it. Now I try to buy gear that solves an actual issue I’m having or might have in the near future as I move in a certain direction with my own music or working on other artist’s projects.
Like buying gear to inspire you, buying something that solves an actual problem so you can work quicker or make better sounding music (not magic fairy dust better – legitimately better) is worth the investment.
Buy Things That Grow Your Skills
Similar to the idea above, improving your skills in songwriting or music production through educational products is a solid investment. The caveat is, if you buy a course, you need to use it.
I bought Friedemann Findeisen’s “The 24-Hour Song” earlier in the year. I have been getting through it in bits and pieces and it’s already been really helpful BUT I know I need to dig into the course properly. This is why I try to carve out 20 – 40 mins on a Sunday to do the lessons and activities.
Educational products are only as effective as the investment of time you give them.
Buy Something Unique
I’ve talked about it before but the democratisation of music which is a wonderful thing. It also means we have access to a lot of the same tools. This means we can create a lot of the same sounds because we have access to similar products.
This is actually an opportunity. Buy music making products that give you unique sounds.
The Takeaway
Trust me, I love a deal on Black Friday. But as my beard has more white in it and I realise time is the most valuable thing we can’t buy, I really think a lot more about putting money down for Black Friday specials just because they’re cheap.
I hope the thoughts above help you get a real deal for Black Friday (or at any other time in the year).
