I like simple plugins that are really useful. Elysia Niveau Filter is just one of those plugins. It may only have two knobs and two buttons but it is a powerful sound shaping tool.
I was recently working on on a Doxkyn track where I’d recorded a big synth string part on the Minifreak. I could here it was cluttering up the low-mids and I wouldn’t have minded a little more shine on the top.
Reach For The Best Tool
At first I grabbed Logic Pro’s channel EQ. It did a reasonable job but as I realised I was basically creating a tilt EQ it reminded me of the Niveau Filter. There is a certain transparent sweetness to it that has helped all sorts of projects including some mastering jobs.
I found my centre frequency where I wanted to tilt from. Dialled in what I thought was about right with the synth strings solo’d. Added in the rest of the arrangement and tweaked a little further, adjusted the volume and the strings sat in the mix just like they needed too.
The Takeaway: The Eylsia Niveau Filter is free and it’s a real gem. If you don’t have it, get it.
As it says on the box “Whenever a classic shelving filter would be too limited and a fully parametric filter would be too much, the niveau filter plugin is the perfect tool.” I agree with that.
For me the Niveau Filter is a good tool because it makes you think differently about the way you EQ. In a time where there are EQs with incredible features and with that complexity, how you think about what you’re trying to achieve is as important as the tool you use to do it.
