I was working on the arrangement for a new Doxkyn track this morning. I was creating a downshifter for the mid-section of the song. I had a goofy 80s sort of sound and a white noise sample. I was shifting their start points back and forth to get the fall just right in the mix.

I thought I was happy with what I had but when I listened back the fall of the goofy 80s sound ended too soon before the synth melody kicked in. This left a feeling of dead space. It was subtle but it didn’t feel right.

I moved the start time of the 80s downshifter 283ms so there was more tail and bam, there it was.

The Takeaway: The average punter doesn’t know or care about the gear you use. They’re not thinking about the synth sounds you’ve chosen or the guitar tone you’ve pulled. They often can’t really articulate what they like about a song musically. What they do notice is “the feel” being right.

Having “the feel” right in the songwriting, arrangement and production is completely important. Obsessing about a snare sound or the bass tone if it doesn’t get “the feel” right isn’t important.
